This module is the first in a series of 8. It deals with the very beginnings of the reading process - the sounds of the letters of the alphabet. The pupils are taught the sounds NOT the names of the letters. There are a variety of activities and suggestions are given for these and other extension activities. In keeping with modern trends and research, the sounds of the alphabet are taught in a defenite sequence and the pupil is taught to blend these phonemes together to create words. So the reading process starts immediately. After each set of phonemes there are sentences to read using just those words learnt. It has been found that this gives the pupil an immediate confidence boost. Reversals of letters B and D often present a problem for pupils and there are several activities to help with this if the pupil needs them. The BURT READING SCHEME caters for those pupils who have already been in the classroom environment for some time but for one or other reason are not at an age appropriate reading level. The scheme has not been designed for classroom use, although some of the worksheets are very useful as part of a classroom/group based phonic curriculum. BURT READING SCHEME MODULE 1 consists of 104 pages of activities to consolidate thorough understanding of the sounds of the various letters of the alphabet and certain blends.
